Of bus seats, aunties and Slipknot.

stuff

Singaporeans are a very special brand of humans. Like all humans, they display a set of very complex behavior, one that is only unique if you are a Singaporean. No wonder the catchphrase from the tourism board is “Uniquely Singapore”. First off, Singaporeans display a territorial attitude. At the men’s toilet, two guys will never pee  next to each other, unless necessary. There will always be a gap of one urinal between two pissing guys. The same goes for toilet cubicles. This territorial behavior has extended to bus seats as well, where this behavior is modified. Two friends will never share the same seat. In fact, they will seat in different seats, and shout across to each other in a loud voice. Not only is this behavior portrayed by young adults, middle age ladies are affected by this disease as well. I was caught right in the middle of this situation. At that moment I was plugged into my ipod (as i always do), listening to the voice of Joanna Wang , when three aunties boarded the bus at the science faculty bus stop. Two of them occupy the seat in front and behind me (the seat next to theirs was bloody empty), and a third on the opposite aisle. A typical Singaporean behavior. What occurs next was a series of bitching about their employer, at a volume higher than normal. I concluded that they must not have enough time to dig their earshit, and thus they are unable to hear each other. Given the volume I play my music (which is fairly loud at 75% of the max volume), I was quite taken aback when I could actually hear their conversation crisp and clear. Joanna Wang evolved into Nirvana, in an attempt to drown the voices. The louder music managed to drown the voices, but only by 0.1%. It was at this moment when one of the aunties said “lim peh”. I almost burst out laughing. Either they do not know hokkien, or they are transvestites. The blabbering went on and on, and I got pretty annoyed and angsty, perhaps partly due to the music. Exit Nirvana, enter Slipknot at full blast. Obviously these aunties 1. have no sense of consideration to fellow commuters; 2. really need to dig their ears; 3. Should go for hokkien lessons and 4. lack courtesy. It was an enduring ride  that lasted till buona vista. Best thing was, when I left the bus, the lady muttered:”youths these days ah, really no consideration for others. Listen music so loud, people wanna talk also cannot hear. Later go deaf then you know.” @#$%^&*(@#$%^&*(#$%^&*(#$%^&*(#$%^&*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( i must totally restrain myself from a string of expletives out of respect for the elderly.)
