Political Correctness-why this right is wrong
I was just reading some essays and commentaries. Than it also struck me, that often so often people are shocked by what we have capacity to say. In fact they’d probably agree, but still think it wrong to have said/thought such a thing. Usually with relevance to anything on racial lines. Is this what we call political correctness? What strikes me is how, due to political correctness, somethings just become taboo. Forbidden so as to speak. We don’t ever speak about the less academically inclined Malay community, lest we are a prominent member of that said community. Some might consider what I have just said racially charged and wrong. But the truth is, I think I have already played so much of the political-correctness game by saying “academically less inclined”. This extends to lesser issues, such as jokes. Its down right crude and crass to make race jokes, lest we ourselves are the butt of the joke. I don’t try to address why this is so? It probably is beyond me. However what does happen is we do lose truth. Even in jokes there is truth. After all stereotypes come about from a truth, although it is often exaggerated. I can propose an alternative. One which has actually been around for awhile. One that was phased out so subtly, that most did not rue its absence, and did not turn it to when political correctness became a bane to the truth. I speak about self censorship. I believe that there are thinks that one does not speak about openly or display. Things that would often be misconstrued as rude or vulgar, no matter your intentions. I believe in not bringing up certain topics in “good company”. That is to say, company in which form and decorum counts for more. (why ever this is, be it you do not know them well, or you and them are just a bunch of pretentious poofs) This would be self censorship. It doesn’t however mean that you do not believe or will not say what was held back. It just means you choose to say it in more appropriate times. In this manner truth is not lost. Its only shared with those who are likely to be receptive. However over time, I think the overtly pragmatic and ever fearing society that we are, have chosen to err on the side of caution. To save the trouble of discerning when is an appropriate time to say the contentious. When we needed to self censure. Slowly, we gave life to political correctness. Do the next time I say something “supposedly unutterable” think that I am not insensitive or even unaware of social decorum, instead think, that I am making known to you, that I consider you close enough, for me to not self-censure. Or maybe just think, rebel. Because I could really just be having a go at this disease to truth they call political correctness. A little something on political wrongness: That's interesting, everyone in this picture is white. Even the rainbow is white. Perhaps in an ideal world, everyone would be white isn't that right, Rachel? Or should I call you RACIST? Nice try, Hitler. ( Maddox: The Best Page In The Universe )
