Premises and Itches
I was reading The Itch , it brings up an interesting notion, which has been brought up before that of the world we perceive mayhaps not be the real thing. However it takes an interesting slant in bringing with it, our understanding of medicine as it is. Seeing how the concept of medicine is a very physical one, which tries to address problems in manner in which we can understand. However what happens if what we believe to exist doesn’t? Often doctors suggest that the patient is psychosomatic or suffering from various mental illnesses. This thought, that our brains interfere with our perception, would than suggest dealing with the problem at hand becomes very much more difficult, seeing how, we cannot be sure we are perceiving the problem in the first case! It becomes not unlike solving picture puzzles, whereby, we might be labouring under the wrong premises and never reaching the answer, but once the premises are rethought, the answer materializes. In my view, I think this findings on phantom limbs, could perhaps lead to a rethink of how philosophical thoughts (as much as I am unfond of them) can be integrated with modern medicine and other pursuits. When the new premises fall into place, I think we could possibly witness another renaissance.
